A few comments from some of our guests about the courses and accommodation we offer at AlpBase.com

Dear Jerry
Thank you very much for your email – glad to know that everything was OK at Chalet Chabrand after we left.
We all had a really memorable holiday with you, and were thoroughly impressed with your considerable help and advice right from the first time I contacted you. Also goes without saying that we were very comfortable and ‘at home’ in the chalet. Certainly we would have no hesitation in recommending your business for anyone wanting a stay in Vallouise.
Really nice to see some new snow on the Friday – certainly adds to the excitement, although it must be quite a regular occurrence for you. Your advice on equipment hire, boarding lessons etc. were all spot on, so again many thanks.
I would say there is a pretty good chance that we will be contacting you again next year. Maybe then we will remember to take our ski pass receipts so we could sample the obvious delights of Montgenevre.
I know that you said you are planning an expedition to Pakistan in the summer – do you have any plans for internet reports on your progress? If so, would be most interested. Certainly we all wish you good fortune in the venture.
With all good wishes

Cheers Jerry.
We had the most fabulous time and we will definitely like to come back again. It is a wonderful place and we all really enjoyed it so thanks.

P.S. I will get in touch at a later date about next year - I think I have been bitten by the skiing bug!!

Hi Jerry,
I'm back to the grindstone at work again, fully re-charged from a great trip.
Thanks so much for the great accommodation, and all the 'extra' you put in. The conditions advice, route advice, slide show etc are all well above what we have experienced anywhere else. I will pass on your cards when ever I can through the shop.
I'd like to book Chalet Chabrand / Apartment Meleze combo for next winter, do you have any bookings yet for January 2009?
Looking forward to getting into Fournel next year!
Take care of yourselves

Dear Jackie, Jerry, Beth and Lottie
Thank you all for such a special Christmas time. You really made it one to remember. I thought Chalet Chabrand looked lovely, and it felt really comfortable and spacious. Last week-end we thought of you – we had snow!! Lots of it just on the Common!
Hope you are all well and enjoyed the New Year – we really wanted to make it, especially for your party of 42 – amazing! Anyway it was really great to see you all – let’s hope it’s not too long before we meet up again for another fab time.

Many thanks again

Our first visit to the area and what a wonderful place – so much to do, so little time! Skiing a little icy – Serre Chevalier much better for intermediates (me!)! Thanks to Jackie and Jerry and the girls for inviting us to spend New Year with the English taking over the Alphand, had a great night. The doggies loved it, Bernard loves Bertie really……! And who would have thought snow-shoeing would be so hard – or at least for those of us who think we are fit…………..but clearly aren’t!
Best wishes for 2008 and hope to see you again sometime in it!
P.S. Forgot to mention the husky sledging – great for kids and big kids too (I’m 32 and I loved it!!)…..needs lots of warm clothing though.

It is with much happiness that we find returning each year to this corner of the Hautes Alpes. We have been coming here for 10 years now and we have made many friends. We know all of the seasons but not all of the walks, because there are so many to choose from! But what was really new for us this year was to find the Family Gore – really nice people! Friendly, hospitable and full of humour. Thank you for cake, the tea, the aperitifs and your fun. The week was too short but we enjoyed the walks each day and we hope to come again next year but for a longer period.
Thank you all and we look forward to talking again in English, French and some more Franglais.
Bonne continuation and the best for every one of you and take care!

Hi Jerry,
Just thought that you may like to know that we arrived safely back home at 1.00am on Monday morning. All very tired, but with very many happy memories of our stay at Chalet Chabrand. I was the only one back to work yesterday and felt awful all day. Fortunately I only had just around 100 tourists to give advice to, so had a reasonably quiet day.
It goes without saying that we had a fantastic time in Vallouise. We fell in love with both Vallouise and the surrounding area. Jim, Catherine and I, and one or two of the others, have decided that we could quite easily live in Southern France. (Preferably in the Ecrins National Park area.) Catherine has told Peter that he has to teach her to climb.
We had an exceptionally warm welcome from everyone that we met and there is a distinct possibility that we will be asked to make a return visit to the music festival in 2008. I hope that we will be able to stay with AlpBase again. Next time though, we would stay for much longer.
I'd like to take this opportunity of thanking you once more for the exceptional help and advice which you gave to me during the past months. The warm welcome, the help, advice and information you gave to us on our arrival was appreciated by us all. We were/are more than impressed by the attention to detail regarding all the informative literature which you have prepared for anyone who books a chalet with AlpBase. It was also really nice of you to come and say au revoir the night before we left. Impressed? YES we were!
I look forward to keeping up to date with the happenings at AlpBase and may I take this opportunity of wishing you, Jackie, the children and of course AlpBase.com all the best for the future.
Again, many many thanks Jerry for everything

Kind Regards

Thank you so much for a wonderful stay and for all your help. Steve googled Francois our AlpBase guide back here in Blighty and was beside himself to think he'd climbed with such a pukka rock climber. I particularly appreciated his delicate use of English: "yes, why not try it? It might hold". We very much enjoyed the slideshow - I was fascinated by the nitty gritty details - I never knew before how bolts were set on routes and assumed mammoth abseils. Francois said you had put in routes on chalk cliffs on the South Coast but I'm glad I didn't know that before spending the day rock climbing with you as it reflects less than happily upon your risk-awareness and (frankly) sanity... It is a matter of pride for me personally that my last climb in Ailefroide was cruising (and I mean cruising) up a 5b, which for me represents Progress.

We shall definitely be back in early January for some ice climbing and Steve (currently in Munich) will email you in due course re bookings. I have already recommended you to a colleague (a nice lawyer) and her mountain-climbing husband and I think you'll very probably hear from them in due course.

Best wishes (and to Bertie),

The warm weather was great – made capsizing bearable. The rivers were superb and George is now desperate to compete in your local Rabioux Rodeo in August – next year maybe! We discovered why you see plenty of kayaks and no canoes in the Durance after taking an open Canadian canoe down various bits of the gorge – the bruises will be a colourful reminder of the local rivers. The boys loved climbing with Francoise and swimming the Guil and we all enjoyed the Glacier Blanc hike despite the local downpour – the thunder and lightning display was truly awesome. I loved the Vallouise market and the fete – great to have such a stunning display of fireworks arranged for our stay. The garden BBQ and Jerry’s slide show made for really nice evenings and we met some lovely people.
All in all a great multi-active couple of weeks. Thanks to all the Gore family.

Five years ago we came here for the first time (we were the first French visitors for AlpBase) and we came again almost each year. What can we say this time? Decidedly, the kindness and friendliness of Jackie and Jerry are most considerable. Thanks Jerry for this fabulous outing to the Pic Coolidge – despite of the Lithuanian team that was so slow in the rocky couloir!!
Thanks Jackie for initiating me to the canoe. And congratulations to Beth and Lottie for their musical improvements!
All our love to you!

Hi Jerry,

All is good over here. Weather's rubbish though and I really wish that I was back out in the Alps. Not that I'm jealous at all that you're out there permanently!

I've attached a few pictures to this mail and am awaiting the last of our friends' photos before I send you a CD with a bigger selection of shots on. Let me know what you think of these and I'll send lots more for you.

We all had a superb holiday (both canoe groups) and I'm sure we'll be back with you next year (I'm looking at 2 weeks next year all going well!).

Take care,
Regards,

A great week of canoeing, despite weather being a bit up and down. Water levels for the time of year were average. Rivers done included the following:
- Bouncy Durance
- Blast of Briançon Gorge
- Pretty Claree (mind undercut on middle!)
- Big water on middle Guil, okay on upper
- Ubaye a long way to drive but good paddling – race course great fun!
- Fast running on the Guisane, made it big and bouncy, and it was snowing.

Good stay in Chalet Gyronde, and Apartments Les Valerianes and L’Acacia – great garden!! And loved Bertie the Dog.

A great return visit, a bit cooler and not so much snow as last year, but still plenty. Edwin has mastered the snowboard, and Florence won her 3 stars! Not sure about the “Via Ferrata”, more of a “Via Mortis” for Charles with a spectacular view of the Les Vigneaux cemetery from 4,000 feet above!. Certainly won’t forget it!
Thanks again for your ever generous hospitality, we will go forth and spread the word.

There’s some nice ones + that cheeky little avalanche – remember??
Been trudging through muddy rain soaked hills all weekend. How u must miss Scotland.

Hi Jerry and Jackie
Just a note to say how much we enjoyed our skiing holiday and to thank for your help with the organization, and for making us so welcome on the first evening after our tiring journey.
We were very impressed with how friendly and helpful the Pelvoux resort assistants were, particularly with the children. It was great to have an apartment straight out onto the slopes and made for a very relaxing holiday.

We can recommend the take away pizzas from Menaldo's in Vallouise La Casse. Coincidentally the restaurant is run by Lottie's excellent ski instructor Francoise Menaldo, who spoke very good English.

I would also be interested to get hold of any information on climbing in Madagascar, particularly in the Nose Be area as this might make for a great combined climbing/family holiday.

Thanks again, and the idea of a summer trip in the future is very appealing.

Just a quick thank you for the great week that Fiona and I had with you and Francois. The week was well planed and we had a lot of fun. We both felt that we had gone on a holiday and become part of a family rather than booking a guiding company. The hospitality shown by you, Jackie, Francois and Bertie (the dog!) was exceptional. We are already making plans to return next year with the whole family and hope we can book Francois for another week.

On the way back to the airport you asked what we felt set your operation apart from the rest and we feel that the pictures that were taken and the transfers were for us a definite plus. As a side thought maybe you could suggest to Marilyn and Dennis to ask what people would like in their lunches as we felt guilty not eating all that they gave us !!

Anyhow thanks for a great week and we will certainly be in touch to book two or three holidays next year and hopefully our kids can meet up with yours as Emily, our eldest, is still desperate to move to France.

Regards

Fiona and Tony

Hi Jackie and Jerry
Thanks again for a fab time. For me the highlights were the family introduction to the place and the useful, well thought out information sheets. All was clean and there was an excellent attention to detail – in fact we would have liked to stay longer, it was so cosy. In addition when I stayed at your chalet I thought Jackie’s cooking was great and offering activities with guests could only enhance their experience in the Ecrins.
Looking forward to seeing you and the family in January.

Hi Jackie
Liz and I just want to thank you more than you can possibly ever imagine for the wonderful time we had in Vallouise. We really had the most fantastic 10 days ever and without your help it would not have been possible. The AlpBase accommodation and valley was truly superb, as were you! Thank you so much for helping out and ensuring we had a honeymoon to remember. (I think it was the balloons and champagne you left really that won us over!)

In fact we loved it so much, we are currently 3 weeks into our 10 year plan to ensure we move to the valley, so if you are still there then we may see you more than you ever thought! And this I'm not joking about!

Anyhow, I better get back to work but looking so forward to our return trip in Feb and hopefully booking the next one for late summer again...

Take care and once again THANK YOU!

Chris Pretty
AMI Trainee Representative
April 2006

April and a week free from work. Where to go with a family of two adults and
4 children aged 17 to 9, and everything in between? We all like climbing and
for me, being an AMI Trainee Representative and working towards my IML
assessment in June, we had to pick a place with sun and snow. I had heard of
Jerry during my climbing career and only met him once at a presentation he
gave to a mountaineering club. I was impressed both by his professionalism
and warmth so over the Sunday lunch table asked the family if they wanted to
go to the Ecrins. HOORAH!! Was the reply.......immediate e-mail to Jerry and
we were on, so easy. The week was perfect and exceeded our expectations in
every way. being an old rock-jock from the 80's I wanted to get some rock in
but needed to get Via Ferrata and snowshoeing done, both of which were very
simple to sort out. The rest of the family did snowboarding, skiing, via
ferrata and snowshoeing. The weather was perfect sun and snow, the ease to
get to shops was great, even petrol was easy to get hold of. All the
essentials were outlined by Jerry on our arrival, a very nice personal touch
at the start. I like this attitude it makes the family relax and settle in
quicker.
We spent the week meeting up with Jerry, on and off, and his hospitality by
himself and his family were exceptional. If you are thinking of working
towards qualifications, doing hard routes, doing the family thing or just
wanting to chill this is DEFINITELY the place to be.
Hot sun, snow, rock to die for and a very comfortable atmosphere - unmissable!

Had a great fortnight – lots of great skiing, climbing, hiking, pony-trekking and swimming. To top it all we bought a chalet – all with Jackie and Jerry’s help, guidance and expertise. La Grace is a great day out – sun bathing at the café at the top and skiing one of the Triffid Couloirs. Jerry got down the Pan De Rideau just!! Not recommended unless into skiing 50degree slopes is your thing. Certainly scared the life out of me just looking down it from the top.
The marmottes down at Mt Dauphin under the fort are great fun and highly recommended – Catriona really enjoyed feeding them lettuce, plus the rabbits in the garden at L’Acacia. Many thanks to Jackie and Jerry, Beth and Lottie, not least for all the estate agent advice. Don’t know how you do it but thanks it made the holiday very special.

March 2006

Many thanks for a great week. I thought Francois was very good. I was very happy and learnt a lot more from him than most other guides/instructors I’ve had. Also, I don’t know what the “deal” is in terms of hours of instruction, but I felt he was very generous with his time and gave us long days. The accommodation was good, meals were great, I enjoyed getting to know the family and overall I thought the course was very good value. Thanks again and see you next year.

Hi Jerry
The ice-climbing trip was fantastic. Definitely up to (or exceeding) expectations in all respects. I'm sure that James and I will both be back for more. The gite was fine - good food, very friendly and convenient being right in the village. We also particularly appreciated your and Jackie's hospitality - a unique and unexpected feature of the holiday. Marie Claire was perfect for what we needed, and she gave us an excellent week's climbing. Thank you for encouraging her to let us do some leading.
All the best. Hope to see you next year.

Thank you so much for an excellent week at Vallouise. I’m very glad I came out to you instead of scratching around in Scotland. I certainly hope to come back again.
The key factors that made it so worthwhile were:

1.   We had a first rate guide. Francois is of course a mountaineer of impeccable credentials, but he was also flexible enough to allow us to follow our own wishes (for example, I spent quite a bit of time practising my leading techniques). From what I hear some other guides, especially in other parts of France, are not as accommodating.
2.   Our comfortable accommodation and Giles’s sumptuous cuisine were included in the course. Some other outfits expect you to book accommodation separately, which can only mean more hassle all round.
3.   I was lucky to be paired up with Matthew as a climbing partner.
4.   We were lucky with the weather. The 50cm of snow you had afterwards must be better news for the skiers than the ice climbers
5.   Finally, many thanks to you for all you did yourself to fix me up with a course at short notice. I learnt a huge amount and enjoyed it immensely

Hi Jerry
We had a fantastic time, we really did. I reckon the ice and mixed climbing in the Ecrins Massif, in and around L’Argentiere, must be one of the best kept secrets of French climbing. It's not surprising that so many of the top French climbers live in the village. I'm done with queuing for routes and paying extortionate prices in the popular resorts. This area has everything you need from skiing to short easy roadside ice pitches to huge multi-pitch mixed desperates. The locals are so friendly and it's so nice to really feel like you have the place to yourself. I'm definitely back next year for more ice but I'm also pretty keen to check out the rock in the summer.'
Many thanks again.

Thanks for a great week’s climbing. But I guess in a place like L'Argentiere you are on to a winner straight away. But what really made the course special was your hospitality. On other guided weeks I have never cared for the evenings after the climbing. They always seemed like working away from home. But you made it seem like I was away climbing with friends.
And so from the start the course just got better and better
Thanks again for a great time.

Anyway just to say we had a great time and would recommend you to any one and more than happy to provide any quotation, you know “Jerry was great and we love him!!" No seriously it was pretty brill. Our main aspirations as you know were to have a good time in wonderful surroundings. We love climbing, are not at all talented or fit but like being in the places that it takes us. We wanted to spend the week gaining experience on ice, building up our ability to become more self sufficient as a pair and find some of the best routes to suit our
level, as well as learning a little about avalanche awareness. But really we just wanted to have a great week, burn off the Christmas pud in superb surroundings, and for me personally complete a winter route without tears!
Both Mark and I thought you and your team really did achieve all those things and amazingly all with a smile. Thanks again it was fab!

Jackie and Mark Valentin

Many thanks for a fine week in Les Ecrins, enjoying the fleshpots of Ailefroide and Vallouise. What a great base for a climbing family - easy and accessible rock routes on your doorstep, a plethora of short, long and in-between walks, plenty of wildlife, superb weather and there's even a local micro brewery - heaven!
We did the Via Ferrata, by the way, down at L'Argentiere - found it very testing for the easiest VF in the world! Then went down to the Verdon where my wife told me it was too cold while I sweated a lot. All very curious. Great to see you all and we look fwd to seeing the Gore's at hopefully more regular intervals be it here or en France.
Onwards with best wishes and all that sort of thing.

August 2005

Hi Jerry
Just writing to say how much of a good time I had climbing with you during the course – I can’t believe it’s already my second at AlpBase! I learnt a lot and felt as if I really pushed myself. After doing Rank Xerox on the Tete D’Aval I really want to start doing bigger and harder 'Big walls' all around the world. It was a lot of fun!
Just off climbing for 4 days with some friends, should be great.
Cheers!
Theo Elmer

A quick thank you for your help and advice, and a great holiday. You
were spot on saying that as soon as most Brits get on bolted routes they
climb far harder than in the UK on trad. Because despite climbing very little above HS in the UK I happily got stuck into loads of nice climbs including Palavar les Flots and
what had to be the highlight for me - La Cocarde on the Poire. The weather was gleaming for the whole time and I even got a bit of Alpinism done - the whole area is much friendlier and felt like a much better use of my leisure time than Chamonix has ever been.
The best thing was getting onto VS's back in the UK and finding them a lot
more straightforward than previously.
Cheers again

Thanks again for a great week - not just the climbing which was superb and
the top tips, but also for making me feel so welcome in your house. I will miss Beth and Lottie.
The Rock Masters course was exactly what it said on the tin and more: a week of superb climbing during which I learnt loads, whilst all the time feeling like I was with a friend rather
than an instructor. Although I always intended the week as a climbing course it turned into a
great holiday as well which was unexpected.

Hi Jerry
I just wanted to say thanks to you and Jackie for your hospitality last week. The accommodation was superb and I would have no hesitation in recommending it to friends.
The slide show was very interesting but it has given us itchy feet. That and our experiences over there are making it very hard for us to settle back into UK climbing. John and I have been back a week now but it seems like an eternity.
Regards to you, Jackie, Elizabeth and Lottie. I hope that we get the chance to get together again soon.

Rock Improvers Course
June 2005

Our thanks to Jerry and family for providing a unique experience in the Southern Alps. The combination of a well managed rock climbing course, fine tuned to our specific requirements, within an informal family setting, gave us the skills we required but always in a relaxed holiday atmosphere. The course was a perfect antidote to our stressful lifestyles back in the UK.
The essential ingredient for any course is the instructor and it would be difficult to imagine a better instructor than Murray Hamilton. His combination of knowledge, skills, and patience made him the perfect coach for our group. A single piece of advice regarding footwork had one member of our group attempting granite slabs at Ailefroide at least two grades higher than he previously thought possible. The culmination and highlight of our trip was Murray guiding us up an eight pitch route on Chemin du Roy, which was well beyond our expectations when we arrived. Murray will definitely be on our requirement list when booking future courses with AlpBase.

Hi Jerry
Nearly 2 weeks have flown by since we left Vallouise, and I've only
just found the time to email....Anyway, first off I just wanted to say a big thank you for making me and Clare feel so welcome, and helping ensure we had such a good time
- it is certainly one of the best holidays I've had in a very long time, and I can't wait to visit again. It's a shame we didn't get organized enough to get out climbing together, but 2 weeks clearly wasn't long enough of a visit!
So... I've already made rough plans to visit again in Feb with a friend to do some ice climbing - we've had several not very successful trips to Scotland the last few winters, and the Ecrins looks like it may offer us a bit more to do and a lot better conditions.
Anyway, thanks again for a great holiday - hopefully be seeing you again in the not too distant future.

Multi Pitch Alpine Rock Course
May 2005

I first met Jerry at a Diabetic conference in 2004 and again at one of his lecture talks in the UK. We got along well having a common interest in climbing and both with type 1 diabetes.

I have been rock climbing for about 3 years without any formal training; the opportunity to spend a week with one of the world’s leading big wall climbers was both exciting and daunting!
I signed up late in 2004 for an AlpBase.com Multi Pitch course in May 2005, and we liaised by email in the interim period with Jerry keen to establish where my strengths and weaknesses lay so we could ‘focus’ the course accordingly.

On Saturday 14th May I drove to the Southern Alps and Jerry’s headquarters in Vallouise; Jerry had prepared a comprehensive itinerary which we reviewed together.
My rock climbing grade was about HVS on trad (placing own protection on the route) and up to about E1 leading on bolted routes; most of my experience has been gained climbing on the Alpine peaks but with limited rock-climbing involved.

Whilst I started the course with some apprehension I was quickly relaxed into a comfortable rhythm which both extended my limits and appraised me with all the safety issues involved in climbing; to say I learnt a lot is a massive understatement!

On the course I was given the opportunity to practice many climbing disciplines including multi-pitch on bolts, multi-pitch trad, gear-placement and climbing technique. Throughout, the team’s infectious enthusiasm and good-nature coupled with their desire to improve my climbing resulted in an amazing week of rock-climbing in beautiful surroundings.

The highlight of the week was, without doubt, our ascent of a 600m. long route on the “Tete D’Aval”. The day before the climb we focused on a very thorough preparation and detailed itinerary for the day. We made an early morning alpine start and climbed over 20 pitches before descending some 10 abseils! The climbing grade and exposure pushed me to new limits which I found challenging to say the least. Throughout the day I was continually encouraged and supported. This was, without doubt, my most rewarding rock-climbing day ever and has opened my eyes to all the future possibilities associated with the sport.

So… to summarize – I have learnt more in a week at AlpBase than all the previous 3 years put together; Jerry and his team of guides were always prepared to adapt the course to meet my objectives rather than rigidly working to a fixed agenda.
Fantastic week guys, very many thanks!
Kevin Groome

P.S. Anyone thinking of signing-up for any of Jerry’s various course’s is most welcome to email me directly at kevin@policysure.com ;by the way I have already signed up for a further course later this year with another climbing friend.

Hi Jerry
Thank you for all your help and hospitality over New Year - we had a great time, really enjoyed it. Will be back through this year - would like to have some time there in the summer as well if possible.

Fiona has taken great pleasure in letting people know that she performed far better than me on the snow. Fi has bought new gear already so we will be back to learn again next winter. Maybe I'll stick to cross country.
Glad to hear that you are real busy and not just enjoying yourself all the time in the snow.
Best regards to you all, keep in touch.

On L'Acacia - the chalet is gorgeous, warm, spacious and super-comfortable.  It's got a washing machine, tumble dryer, microwave and dishwasher - not pre-requisites for everyone's holiday, but great when you have 2 babies in tow.  Did I mention the views? Stunning, with snowy mountains out of every window.  The best thing about the house is its location.  It's only a 4 minute stroll to the start of a huge area of ski du fond (cross country skiing) tracks and a 13 minute drive to Puy St. Vincent, a resort with something for every level of ski and snowboard ability.  La Grave (not for the faint-hearted), Serre Chevalier and Risoul are also drive-able.
On Vallouise - what a great village.  Apart from being really pretty it's got everything you could possibly need - 3 bakeries within minutes from the house, restaurants, a couple of bars, a supermarket, a tabac, a great gift shop for those last minute presents, a pharmacy, a ski hire place (where husband's snow board got the best service it's ever had) and most importantly a cash point that takes Switch!  There's even a discotheque - the Carpe Diem (seize the day!) - about a 15-minute walk away.  What more could you want? We will definitely be back. Joanne Regan

Rock Improvers Course
July 2004

My purpose is to give two people’s account of a week spent climbing with Jerry Gore at AlpBase. In so doing it may assist others in deciding whether AlpBase would be right for them.
After coming across an article by Jerry Gore about his move to France, I looked on the AlpBase website and then contacted Jerry directly. Why?
I explained to Jerry that I had climbed on and off for 20 years, including some alpine jaunts (too short to call them ‘seasons’). Like many I fitted the climbing in with a job and bringing up a family. Without pushing him my son, Theo (15), is as keen as mustard about climbing and we’ve climbed for the last few years: mostly Swanage as it’s the closest, but also North Wales, Cornwall, Lakes, once to Scotland in winter, and for the last two summers we’ve done via ferratas' in the Dolomites.
This year was to be our first foray into the Alps without a steel cable. However, a couple of years ago I experienced problems with arthritis. I thought they had been resolved, but in January (2004) they returned with a vengeance. On really bad days I couldn’t drive but at the time that I wrote to Jerry I was feeling better but it was certainly impairing my getting fit and making me very anxious about our safety; very stiff joints on a 20m single pitch at Swanage and an alpine route are very different.
I ended my email with a simple enquiry: If I cannot beat/ suppress the arthritis is there is anything that AlpBase could allow Theo, and I, to experience climbing in the Ecrins?
Jerry wrote back in a couple of hours and suggested one of his Rock Improvers courses.
And the outcome of that (over?) eager response?
In short, it exceeded my greatest expectations; it was a truly great week. The course gave Theo the knowledge and passion to develop as a climber. And if the latter is long term and rather intangible then the former was very clearly tangible; in that week Theo moved from his seconding VS with me, to leading E3 (on bolts) by the end.
Previously my two greatest fears were guilt and anxiety, guilt at not being able to climb, let alone extend, Theo; anxiety that if I did climb I would be placing us both in a potentially dangerous position. That week passed without a quiver of either fear.

Dear Jerry
Dad forwarded the newsletter to me, the comments you made were a real confidence booster. The week climbing with you was excellent! I can’t thank you enough. I really am starting to push my grade that bit harder, got plenty of 6B+, and 6C’s lined up for my next trip to Swanage. The training seems to be helping, at least 4 days a week on the garage wall, and at the climbing wall, Swanage and Portland. So thanks again the week was great!
Best wishes
Theo Elmer

OK, the first night couldn’t stop farting (must be the mountain air), luckily you guys thought it was Trev! Woke up thinking “Oh God what have I done?” I am outside my comfort zone and Jerry’s gonna make me eat raw seal meat (read his autobiography) when I am only here for the Carbs! Terrified of ski-ing but luckily Serge calmed my nerves by putting his head between my thighs and stroking my calves (fitting our ski boots). Things can only go downhill from here……………..Giving birth is easier than learning to ski – the tears, the hormones, the tantrums, but I delivered a bouncing baby snow plough! Where I wee is my balance and I do a poo to stop – Jackie you are such a cool teacher.
Day 3 – the smell of fear never leaves me, so am I good at stopping or anally retentive? Sad to realise I write books better than I ski but the forever enthusiastic Gore-Tex clan insist on getting me out of my box. Frozen tears against a cobalt blue sky – why am I fretting? The only way to learn is with friends who care enough to laugh when they want to scream. I couldn’t have done any of this without Jackie’s care and Jerry’s madcap attitude “Hey get on with it”. Lottie is wired to the moon and hilarious, and Beth surpassed commendability by handling Henry (3 yrs) in a maternal way only seasoned Mothers three times her age can.
We can’t thank you enough for making our holiday the stuff dreams emerge from.

Ice Climbing Course
January 2004

New destination for TRAIL magazine winter feature!
Brilliant introduction to ice climbing under the fantastic supervision of Jerry and Rogier. Spent a humbling three days here during one of the biggest dumps of the season, witnessed four avalanches yet remained in safe hands all the way through and still managed three full days of challenging steep ice. And the food was even better! See you gain soon.

At it is our first time to this part of the Alps we used the chalet as our base for touring and seeing the local area, inc. the South of France – a three hour drive saw us in Grasse, then Cannes to Monte Carlo on the Route Napoleon. Grenoble was beautiful – Musée de Grenoble – and the Lac De Serre Ponçon huge and blue. The bright autumnal sunlight made the trees every shade of yellow, green, brown and red one can imagine – set off with snow-capped mountains and deep blue sky. Restaurants in Briançon old town recommended.

Well it’s the end of our story here at L’Acacia – you really made us feel at home for these past two weeks. What can we say – everyone needs a Jackie and Jerry when they are on holiday! Cheers for the loan of your harnesses and also the guidebooks and maps, and your good advice. Definitely recommend the local Via Ferratas’ and the walk up the Tetes from Col De Pousterle. Loved the old town of Briançon, the lovely walk up into Narreyroux from Puy. The Glacier Blanc hike was great and saw marmots, fox, red squirrels, alpine choughs, and even a Golden Eagle! Thank you all for helping us rediscover the Alps.

Les Ecrins: its got popular and easy access bits; remote, wild and quite bits; its got awesome rock, plenty of rubble, wicked ice and as much off-piste skiing as you shake a ski pole at; in fact its got the lot. Check out Jerry’s for a top place to stay and enjoy the Alps at their best.

Our holidays at Vallouise has been more marvellous than last year and you made the difference; we have never met so great hospitality and friendliness in renting. We are sure that your family is made for happiness and this one should surely be at L’Acacia. We are so pleased to have met you all and Camille and Nathan we are sure will not forget you. Maybe something special is born/!
We are sorry for our bad English and we really hope to see you next year.

We have had a chalet in the Northern Alps for 12 years and never seen a marmot until last night when we saw lots and lots. Went on a great local Via Ferrata with Jerry but be warned, if Jerry says “lets try the sport variation” just say no!! Great weather, looking forward to coming back soon.

Big, open and beautiful views, and that's just the house. We had a great time skiing, climbing and enjoying the diversity of this great area. After 4 or 5 visits to the Hautes-Alpes we thought we knew it, but we found even more great ski areas, complete with the usual intense blue skies, friendly locals, and stunning alpine scenery. The house was a minute’s walk away from the start of extensive cross-country ski and skating trails with ice climbing and via Ferrata just down the road. In fact you could have spent a morning ice climbing and then just switched to an afternoon cragging in the sun.
Vallouise itself is a lovely village, not hugely developed but with enough bakeries, delicatessens and mini supermarkets to ensure that you don't have to leave it if you don't want to. It's also fairly well supplied with restaurants and bars (and the Carpe Diem nightclub). We ate twice at the Sel et Poivre restaurant in Vallouise - really filling food, especially the donkey’s ears (spinach and cheese). The service was definitely not fast but loads of the local wine seemed to make the time fly past. I'm just glad the chalet was only a few minutes away otherwise I'm not sure we would have made the walk back!

Hope all is well down there in Vallouise - seems a world away now, sadly. Just wanted to thank you, Jackie, Beth and Lottie for being so welcoming during my stay - it really was a terrific week, not just from the climbing perspective, but it also opened my eyes to an alpine lifestyle. I feel I got a hell of a lot out of the climbing with both you and Murray, covering pretty much everything I had hoped to in such a short space of time. Got some great photos as well - a few attached for you!

With 2 couples, 2 Au pairs and 2 babies we knew it was never going to be easy! But in a week of fantastic weather we managed 3 days of pisted skiing at different resorts, a day of ice climbing, some great snowboarding off-piste at La Grave, and even a few days of telemark skiing. We loved the location of the chalet – a small traditional village where you felt right up in the mountains and yet never too far from a nappy supply!

Loads of good off-piste, plenty of room for the family and a different resort every day – life was good. Loved Vallouise – walking through the backstreets amongst the old buildings felt like a time warp back into the 18th Century. Considering we went in the busiest ski month of the season (February) I was amazed at how uncrowded the valley was. Thought Risoul was a real find. A perfect spot for snowboarding – big wide pistes with some wicked couloirs and even a fun park. Cracking!
