What’s it like?
The Paris of the Alps, Alpe-d'Huez is one of Europe's largest
and highest ski resorts. It is also one of only 20 resorts
in the world - all in Europe - with a lift-served vertical
of over 2000 metres.
Built above the original village of Huez, the resort has
expanded in all directions over the past 20 years. Today
it is big and vibrant, with far more shopping and 'things
to do' off the slopes than in most other ski centers, especially
by French standards. There is a huge range of things to
do - aerobics, rifle shooting, archery, body building, classical
music concerts, curling, golf, ice driving, jazz dance,
martial arts, squash, sumo wrestling and tennis. We don’t
go here much mostly because of this fact, preferring real
to plastic outdoor experiences. But then that’s just
the way we are. The resort has a reputation for both good
snowfalls and good sunshine with south facing slopes - the
lower areas are protected by more than 400 snow cannons.
There is a huge beginners area directly above the resort.
From the top of the lifts you can see a reported 20% of
France unless of course it’s raining! I can’t
see it myself! Summer skiing and boarding on the Sarenne
glacier is also very popular in July and August.
