What’s On Offer:
The Hautes Alpes or the Ecrins Massif as it is more commonly known, hosts the southern most 4000m peak in the Alps, the Barre Des Ecrins, with a great collection of slightly lower peaks around it, all offering classic alpine mountaineering. It comprises an area over 30 times larger than the Chamonix Valley, and has the largest concentration of peaks over 3,000 meters in the France. The majority of these alpine summits are easily accessible from AlpBase.com, located in the mountain village of Vallouise, gateway to the Ecrins Massif itself. PLUS this area is renowned for its 300 days of sunshine every year, which means the conditions are very reliable, and it is rare to miss a day’s climbing.

Each Alpine Summits course is bespoke as it is designed around the individual’s abilities and experience. Generally though this week is designed to teach a novice the key climbing and mountaineering skills so that you can attempt your own summer alpine climbs, or Scottish winter routes, without a guide. The week focuses on the skills that you will require on rock, ice and snow; including alpine rope work, glacier travel, navigation, avalanche awareness, and crampon and ice axe techniques. The course also contains as many key mountain experiences as it is possible to fit into a week, including a night at altitude in a mountain hut, and an alpine start for a route. The finale, depending on ability and fitness levels, is an ascent of the Barre Des Ecrins. At an altitude of 4,102m. it is one of the most popular four thousanders' in the Alps.

The maximum guided ratio on this course is 1:4. This ensures that you can progress at your own pace and in accordance with your ability. It also means that the course is very flexible and can be tailored exactly to your requirements. We always use IFMGA qualified mountain guides with extensive experience of the Ecrins.
In the evenings, if time and interest allow, we run workshops on the many technical aspects of alpine mountaineering, from knots and rope work to avalanche awareness, so that we can get the most out of the daylight hours.
 Notes:
1. Courses run Monday to Friday (5 guided days) and the accommodation is available for you Saturday to Saturday (arrival and departure days). The Sunday is a free day and there are a number of options on offer including rock climbing, or hiking locally, and mountain biking.
2. The all inclusive cost covers instruction, food, and accommodation so there is very little else that you have to pay for other than your outdoor activity on the Sunday.
3. Once you have registered you will be sent a full equipment list but where possible you will need to supply your own clothing, rucksack and mountain boots.
4. Participants must arrange their own cancellation and mountain rescue insurance.
After dark: Evening lectures on topics such as avalanche awareness are available, but generally we see the evenings as a time to relax and enjoy. After dinner there is always an opportunity for a climbing DVD or a glass of wine on the balcony as the sun sets on Mt Bonvoisin (3,481m.) at the head of our valley. Conversely Jerry is more than happy to give a slide show on one of his many expeditions.
