What’s On Offer:
Via Ferrata, from the Italian meaning “iron
way”, are mountain scrambles or climbing routes
often across sheer rock faces or cliffs. Using steel
rods or cable bolted to the rock, such routes allow
the adventurous walker to experience all the thrills
of climbing but without the fear and danger. There
is usually a fair amount of hiking required to access
and descend from most Via Ferrata routes.
There are
13 Via Ferrata in the L’Oisans or
the Ecrins Massif as it is more commonly known, an
area 30 times larger than the Chamonix Valley and
host to fantastic alpine hiking as well as the southern
most 4000m peak in the Alps, the Barre Des Ecrins.
All the Via Ferrata in the Ecrins are easily accessible
from AlpBase.com, as we are located in the mountain
village of Vallouise, gateway to the Massif itself.
PLUS this area is renowned for its 300 days of sunshine
every year, which means the conditions are very reliable,
and it is rare to miss a day’s climbing.
Each
Via Ferrata course that we run is bespoke as it is
designed around the individual’s abilities
and experience. Suitable for keen walkers and scramblers
this course is all about learning by doing. After
initial instruction on Via Ferrata safety, we get
straight into the action with ascents of some of
the spectacular Big Walls, cliff faces and mountain
towers in the Ecrins. Most courses conclude with
an ascent of the famous Durance River Ravine, with
its 3 huge wire bridges and awesome Tyrolean rope
swing across the full width of this Verdonesque gorge!

| Notes: |
1. Courses run Monday to Friday (5 guided
days) and the accommodation is available for you Saturday
to Saturday (arrival and departure days). The Sunday
is a free day and there are a number of options on
offer including hiking locally, tandem paragliding,
white water rafting and mountain biking.
2. The all inclusive cost covers instruction, food, accommodation and equipment
so there is very little that you have to pay for, other than your outdoor activity
on the Sunday.
3. The maximum guided ratio on a course is 1:4. This ratio ensures that you can
progress at your own pace and in accordance with your ability. It also means
that the course is very flexible and can be tailored exactly to your requirements.
4. Once you have registered you will be sent a full equipment list but where
possible you will need to supply your own clothing, boots and rucksack.
5. Participants must arrange their own cancellation and mountain rescue insurance.
6. After dark: Generally we see the evenings as a time to relax and enjoy. After
dinner there is always an opportunity for a climbing DVD or a glass of wine on
the balcony as the sun sets on Mt Bonvoisin (3,481m.) at the head of our valley.
Conversely Jerry is more than happy to give a slide show on one of his many expeditions.
