What’s On Offer:
Ski-mountaineering is a fantastic and exhilarating way to enjoy the mountains taking you away from the crowded pistes and onto long and exciting virgin runs. The Hautes Alpes or the Ecrins Massif as it is more commonly known hosts the southernmost 4000m peak in the Alps, the Barre Des Ecrins, with a great collection of slightly lower peaks around it, all offering some of the best off-piste ski terrain in Europe. The Hautes Alpes comprises an area 30 times larger than the Chamonix Valley, and has the largest concentration of peaks over 3,000 meters in France. In addition, the Queyras is another mountain region only 30 minutes from us, which boasts a whole new area for ski touring, as it comprises many 3,000m. mountains.

The region has single or multi-day tours that range from straight forward to those passing through remote and serious mountain ranges. The tours in the Ecrins are mainly wild and difficult but in the lower and lesser known Queyras mountains surrounding the park there are many easier possibilities, making this an excellent area for both the beginner and the expert in this exciting sport.

The majority of these alpine tours are easily accessible from AlpBase.com, located in the mountain village of Vallouise, gateway to the Ecrins Massif itself. The area is renowned for its 300 days of sunshine every year, which means the conditions are very reliable, and it is rare to miss a day’s skiing. Snow falls are good right across the ski touring season which runs from February to May, because the Hautes Alpes are, as the name implies, overall very “high”, and the powder is as good as the best champagne anywhere in the Alps.
Each of our Ski Mountaineering courses is bespoke as they are designed around the individual’s ability and experience, and range from providing beginners with the opportunity to learn and gain confidence in off-piste terrain, through to tours for our more experienced skiers. Each year we vary our programme and introduce new tours to new areas, many of which include ascents and descents of major alpine peaks. We always use local IFMGA qualified mountain guides with extensive experience of the Hautes Alpes. Their knowledge of this area will ensure that you safely enjoy the Ecrins Massif to its full potential.

 Notes:
1. Courses run Monday to Friday (5 guided days) and the accommodation is available for you Saturday to Saturday (arrival and departure days). The Sunday is a free day and there are a number of options on offer including downhill or cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, paragliding and even husky sleigh rides!
2. The all inclusive cost covers instruction, food, and accommodation so there is very little that you have to pay for other than your ski hire and outdoor activity on the Sunday.
3. Participants must arrange their own cancellation and mountain rescue insurance.
After dark: Evening meals are served at 7pm and afterwards there is either a training workshop or an opportunity to unwind with a glass of mulled wine in front of our log fire. Conversely Jerry is always more than happy to give a slide show on one of his many climbing expeditions if you prefer.
