Jerry's Diabetes Page

Born in the UK in 1961, and married with two children, I have enjoyed two very diverse and contrasting careers throughout my life, the first as a businessman, the second as a professional expedition mountaineer, involved in the world of extreme climbing, over a 30 year period. The third major element in my life is Diabetes. I was diagnosed as a Type 1 insulin-dependant diabetic on January 31st 2001. Since this date I have continued to live my life to the full and have not let this chronic condition stop my active outdoor, family or business lives.

My message to all other diabetics is very clear - Diabetes is NOT an excuse to live an unnatural life.
I love to inspire and motivate by showing others how I take on huge physical, emotional and financial challenges and succeeded in spite of my condition.
I see my condition in a totally new light in comparison to the way it is currently supported by health care professionals. I have always seen Diabetes as a physical problem with my body. My pancreas does not work! So I show people how to deal with this situation.
I challenge other Diabetics to view themselves differently, and by changing their mind set they change their World.

I contribute actively to the international diabetic community through articles in diabetic journals and websites, and through my presentations.

Motivational Presentations:

A public speaker since 1994, I have delivered many hundreds of presentations to outdoor, school and business communities. But since my diagnosis in 2001 I am now an established presenter to diabetic/medical groups, and healthcare professionals across Europe.

Key Medical clients/ conferences:

Pri-Med, Mountains for Active Diabetics 2003-2010, l'Association Nationale des Médecins et Sauveteurs en Montagne ’09 (France), Roche Diagnostics GmbH (Germany), “The Lilly/IDF Congress - 2005” (Bulgaria), Pri-Med InDepth Diabetes (800 Doctors in June 2010), Bayer Interdisziplinärer Workshop Sportmedizin May 2011 Southern Germany, Dr. Bennett Memorial Lecture - Expedition Medicine 2011, Across The Divide – Wilderness Medicine Conference, Lake District 2011, Kendal Film Festival 2011, Novo Nordisk Pharma GmbH, Mainz Germany, Dr Med. Testimonials from Jerry's Diabetic Talks and Website Pages:

Hello Jerry,
I've got your contact from MAD as a type 1 diabetic myself, but have known the name for years in the climbing world. Thanks for your post. Great motivation for all T1’s! Personally I am training for the Helvellyn Triathlon - and for my kids swimming of course!
Keep it going!

Blimey 80% bolus reduction - that makes sense. Kind of really useful information which I'm unlikely to get out of my diabetic nurse.
Thanks so much.

Dear Jerry,
Do you remember on the 25th November 2011 - a Friday evening at the Gschwender Alp refuge in Immenstadt where we ate original Kässpätzle with a group of insulin-pump diabetics organized by Brigitte Seeberger?
I hope so, because I’ll say thank you for these impressive hours. For me, 45 years old, interested
in mountaineering in summer and winter, it was a very inspiring discourse. Your words motivated my quality of life and individual liberty – with an insulin-pump. I am new in mountaineering.
For me the conclusion of your experience: Everything is possible – when you will do it, when you know your body and the risks.
I’ve an insulin-pump since march 2011. For me, it is a new liberty. For example it’s totally untroubled, to make a three-hour-tour by road bike after a day working in an office....
Jerry, thank you for telling us about your experiences and expressions. I can use them.
Je te souhaite, ainsi qu'à ta famille, une bonne année, une bonne santé et beaucoup de succès.
Peut-être nous pourrons nous revoir en Oberallgäu ou à Briançon...
Cordialement,

Hi Jerry,
It was great meeting you at the Monza GP and now having listened to some of your experiences at the Kendal Film Festival it makes our conversation seem quite insignificant although I still enjoyed every minute of it.  You are quite an extraordinary person and puts into perspective the dull lives people live.  It’s great to see you living out your passion, or as you called it, your love.
I’m seeking some spiritual and emotional help at the moment as I think my diabetes has had an astounding effect on myself belief which has only just started to bubble over (20 years is a long time to carry this around!!).
No doubt you get told this all the time, but you are an inspiration for anybody. Your presentation was absolutely brilliant and I was amazed by your courage and determination in life and could listen to you all day long. I just hope I can take the positive energy I gained from you and turn it into something worthwhile.
You are definitely one of those amazing people in this world and although I have spent perhaps only 12 hours?? in your company it has been a pleasure to do just that.
Once again it was lovely to meet you and to get an insight into your exhilarating life.
Thank you!
Liz from the Lake District

Film Award:

19th INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF ADVENTURE  -  DIJON (25-28 November 2010)
The  Alain Bombard Award
This award, which recognizes the exceptional nature of an adventure comprising an important  medical element, is given to the British climber Jerry Gore for his message of hope to people with diabetes in the film Trango by Denis Roy (Totem Pole and Chrysalis studio productions).

“The British climber Jerry Gore gets to have an almost normal life, and ensures he does his fair share of work as a team member despite very difficult conditions, high altitude and extreme Himalayan rock walls. A real message for people with this type of condition and who practise mountaineering. It is possible to do it! Diabetes is not an excuse to give up, one just needs to learn to manage it to move forward. A real life lesson." (published on www.kairn.com)
